Portraits of high society in the 19th century

Portraits of high society in the 19th century

The room features work characteristic of the period by George Dawe, Franz Xaver Winterhalter, Gerhard von Kugelgen, and Franz Kruger. These artists gained popularity in their lifetime and were truly “fashionable” painters.

The English painter George Dawe is known above all for his series of portraits of Russian generals, who distinguished themselves in the Patriotic war of 1812. He also created family and children’s portraits, such as the portrait of Nicholas I’s children - Grand Duke Alexander and Grand Duchess Maria.

Among the finest paintings from the original collection at the Gatchina Palace is the portrait of Grand Duchess Anna Pavlovna, the future Queen of the Netherlands, by the Revel artist K.Z. Valter.
