The Memory Hall of the Great Patriotic War

The Memory Hall of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 was opened in the Chesma Gallery of the Gatchina Palace. The Chesma Gallery created in the 18th century to commemorate the victory in the battle of Chesma in 1771, while The Russian fleet totally destroyed the Ottoman Navy. The Gallery was one of the best works by architect Vincenzo Brenna. In 1944 the interior was destroyed by the fire and has not been restored.

In 2018 the walls and fragments of survived reliefs were fixed and a few of the historical interior details were reconstructed: the door portal, the fragment of the wall with a window and the part of the parquet floor, the balcony used to house musicians during the celebrations.

The effect of military destruction are preserved in the gallery to remind of the horrible tragedy of the 20th century. The documentary film on Gatchina liberation from the Nazis in January 1944 is on display in the exhibition room.
