Great Military Study of Nicholas I

Great Military Study of Nicholas I

Following the remodeling of the palace, Nicholas Is private rooms were located on the ground floor of the Arsenal Wing. They were furnished in keeping with the Emperors preferences. Nicholas was fond of military science and was well versed in it. In this hall an attempt is made to recapture the Grand Military Study of Nicholas I. The unique memorabilia on view includes items from the Emperors room. The walls of his study were adorned with watercolors depicting military uniforms by H. Lang and K. Piratsky ranging from the time of Peter I to Nicholas period. Also on display are works devoted to the time of Friedrich the Great by Carl Schultz, a well known Berlin painter of battle scenes.

The most important painting in the study was Paul I and his Suite (1802) by J.B. Lampi (Jr.), which entered the collection in 1840.

Henry Gambs, a renowned St Petersburg-based cabinet-maker, supplied the furniture for Nicholas apartments. He constructed a set of chairs to furnish the study and a bureau that still bears an inscription The Tsars Study and is now on display in the room.
