Monument to Emperor Paul I

ïàìÿòíèê Ïàâëó.JPG The Monument to Paul I was installed on the parade ground in 1851. The Russian sculptor I. P. Vitaly sculpted the emperor as he was depicted in the ceremonial portrait painted by S.S. Shchukin in 1796, a portrait that was approved by Pavel Petrovich himself. The statue is set on a four-sided pedestal of Finnish polished granite next to the wall around the parade ground.

The six-year old Grand Duke Alexander Alexandrovich, the future emperor Alexander III, attended the opening ceremony. This was a symbolic event, as after his accession to the throne in 1881, the Grand Duke moved his residence to Gatchina and made the Gatchina Palace his favorite “home.”
