Upper and Lower Dutch Gardens
The Upper and Lower Gardens were laid out in a formal style of gardening in 1794-1795. The Carp Pond and the canal separated them from the Palace Park. The gardens were named so after the flowerbeds that were cultivated there, and Holland was seen in the 18th century as a trend-setter in flower growing. The marble statutory appeared very effective against this brightly colored background. Formal, geometrically patterned and neat parks looked like a continuation of palace interiors in the open air.
