Three-arch (Lion) Bridge
The bridge was built to the design of Andreyan Zakharov in 1799-1801. It took its alternative name from the lion faces that decorate the keystones of the three arches. The architect intended to install on low pedestals allegorical sculptural groups “Abundance of Rivers”. Due to the tragic death of Paul I the scheme was not realized. Even so, the Lion Bridge remains one of the finest examples of landscape architecture. Destroyed during the war, the bridge was restored at the end of the last century.
