Botanical Gardens

Gatchina park

The Botanical Gardens were laid out under the supervision of the master Fedor Helmholtz and were planned in rectangular, geometrical layout. The paths were lined with trees rarely seen in the northern climate – elms, yew trees, beeches, etc. These were replaced with lime trees and oaks in the 19th century that later ran riot and gave the Botanical Gardens a special appearance, distinct from other park areas.
