Mask Portal

ïîðòàë Ìàñêà.jpg

A portal of stone that came to be known as the Mask Portal was erected under the supervision of Vincenzo Brenna from 1795-1797 in front of the Birch House, in order to hide its unremarkable appearance.

It was constructed of Pudost limestone. The monumental character of the Portal reminds one of a triumphal arch of Ionic order. The appearance of sixteen columns against the background of century-old trees is quite dramatic. The Portal is about 9 meters high and some 13 meters wide.
