Numismatic
The Gatchina Museum coin collection was small in size and probably random. It featured mostly Russian coins and commemorative medals dating from the 18-19th centuries.
In 1920, after the palace received museum status, the professor Verekh numismatic collection entered the museum holdings. Again, it was comprised mostly of the 18-19th century Russian medals and coins. This collection of 1188 items was particularly noted for the medals depicting portraits of Roman popes and members of the Russian Imperial House. Following the evacuation of the treasures, all icons and medals of precious metals were transferred to the State Fund and have not been yet returned to the Gatchina palace. However, the copper and bronze coins and medals from the Verekh collection returned almost entirely and now make up the core of the museum numismatic holdings.
