In the pre-war period, the Gatchina collection was highly varied and included some of the finest artworks, dating from classical antiquity of the first-third centuries AD, as well as modern ages from the 17th to the early 20th centuries. The collection represented a variety of stylistic movements, ranging from baroque to art nouveau and covered an extensive group of countries such as Italy, France, Germany, Ireland, China, and Russia. The collection included objects made of decorative stones, including marble, granite, porphyry, jasper, jade, agalmatolite, serpentine, etc.
The collection was partly lost during the war, but the majority of it survived unscathed. Some of the items, however, are still kept in other museums, the Pavlovsk museum in particular.
