Evacuation

Evacuation

The hall focuses on the museum’s workers and their heroic actions during World War II. In the tragic years of wartime, Seraphima Nikolaevna Balaeva organized and inspired the Leningrad museum workers. Up until September 1941, she was responsible for evacuating the art collections from the Gatchina Palace and then led efforts to preserve the exhibits that were relocated to St. Isaac’s Cathedral for storage.

The diary that S.N. Balaeva continued to keep even in the most difficult years serves today as a valuable source of information for historians and museum workers in their studies of the palace’s wartime history by providing accounts of the museum’s staff and collections during the war.
